The Democratic Party may be in for a wild ride, with only 5 states under the control of a Democrat Governor and a Democrat legislature (or assembly, or congress, depending on the state.)

Several states, however, have divided governance, meaning either a Republican Governor and Democratic Legislature, or vice versa.

BallotPedia breaks it down:

Oregon, California, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Delaware are the only five Democratic holds.

Even in liberal Vermont, a Republican governor won the Governorship in a shocking upset.

Edit: An earlier version of this article said only 4 state houses are in control of the Democratic Party. We neglected poor Delaware.
