A former Northampton city councilor and local theater operator has been arrested on child pornography charges in San Francisco, authorities said.

The San Francisco Police Department said March 16 that John Morrison, 71, was arrested at his Newton Street residence in the city and faces charges of possession of child pornography, possession of more than 600 files of child pornography and distribution of child pornography.

Authorities said a search warrant was served at Morrison’s home March 13, during which multiple devices containing child porn were recovered. The files on the devices, police said, contained children performing sex with adults.

Morrison owned and operated the now-defunct Pleasant Street Theater and also the Pleasant Street Video Store. His run in local government included multiple terms as the Ward 4 city councilor in the 1990s.

According to Morrison’s LinkedIn profile, he worked as the education director at the California Film Institute. Police also said Morrison taught film production and screening classes to young children in Marin County, California.

Authorties began investigating Morrison last November when it was determined an individual on his block was “uploading and trading graphic child pornography through a chat messenger application.”

Police said the investigation remains ongoing and that anyone with information or suspects they had suspicious contact with Morrison to contact the Special Victims Unit at 415-558-5500.
